Deep Dive into Doshas: What Are They?
In Ayurveda, the concept of doshas is fundamental. Doshas are the biological energies that govern the physical and mental processes in the body, and form the blueprint of your constitution. There are three doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha, each derived from the five elements - space, air, fire, water, and earth. Understanding your dosha is the first step in creating a lifestyle that supports balance and vitality.
Understanding the Doshas
Vata (Space and Air) governs movement, creativity and communication. Balanced Vata brings energy and adaptability; imbalanced Vata may result in anxiety, dry skin, insomnia or digestive issues. Vata is associated with qualities like lightness, coldness and irregularity.
Pitta (Fire and Water) governs digestion, metabolism, and intellect. A balanced Pitta promotes clarity, determination, and sharpness, while an imbalance can lead to irritability, inflammation or overheating. Pitta’s qualities include heat, intensity and sharpness.
Kapha (Water and Earth) governs structure, stability and immunity. Balanced Kapha fosters calmness, strength and endurance, but an imbalance can cause lethargy, weight gain, or congestion. Kapha is characterised by heaviness, coolness and steadiness.
Determining Your Dosha
We all have a unique doshic makeup, known as our Prakriti. While we may have one dominant dosha, most of us have a combination. For example, someone may be predominantly Vata-Pitta or Pitta-Kapha. Identifying your dosha involves observing physical traits, mental tendencies and health patterns.
The Importance of Balancing Your Dosha
When doshas are in balance, the body functions optimally. However, external factors like diet, climate, stress, and lifestyle can disrupt this balance, leading to Vikriti, or an imbalanced state. Ayurveda provides tools to restore equilibrium by addressing the root cause of imbalance rather than just symptoms.
Tips for Doshic Balance
Vata: Stay warm, eat grounding foods, and maintain a regular routine. Favour cooked, warming foods like soups and stews.
Pitta: Avoid overheating, choose cooling foods, and practice stress management techniques. Coconut water, coriander and fennel seed water, cucumber and aloe vera are excellent for Pitta.
Kapha: Incorporate invigorating activities, eat light and spicy foods, and avoid over-sleeping. Spices such as ginger and black pepper can energise Kapha.
